Spring Break Travel Tips from Assist America
December 11, 2017

Spring Break is here and people are heading to popular vacation destinations in the U.S. and all over the world. Assist America has published safety tips for some of the more popular destinations:
- Cancun, Mexico – Be aware of your surroundings, always buy bottled water and be careful of warning flags on beaches. Cancun’s strong undertow stretches from the Hyatt Regency all the way south to Club Med, so watch the ocean conditions. Also, in Mexico, the emergency telephone number is 066 (not 911) and can be dialed via a public phone.
- South Padre Island, Texas – It is safer to stay in the United States for Spring Break but don’t stray too far south if you are visiting South Padre Island. Two major drug trafficking hubs, Matamoros and Nuevo Progresso, are just 30 minutes away but are not worth the risk of finding inexpensive alcohol and a lower drinking age south of the border.
- Jamaica – It is best to stay inside your resort to get the most pleasure from your stay. Off property you are exposed to locals coming up to you offering drugs and other services. You should also be watchful at the airport. Both Kingston and Montego Bay airports have recently experienced violence.
- Panama City Beach, Florida – Enjoy beautiful beaches, hotels and restaurants in this popular destination but sometimes the taxis and shuttle buses can be unreliable, so it is important to follow-up if you need transportation. Remember to always keep your ID with you, especially if you are drinking or utilizing the shuttle system.
Travel is great fun, but go prepared, and be cautious of unfamiliar surroundings and the people around you so that you get the most from your Spring Break experience. Also, please remember to carry your Assist America card when you travel!
